You are your own product – Market yourself strategically at work to stick out

One product can’t do everything well, and within a crowded, highly competitive marketplace where every product is trying to stick out in its own way, it’s often the rule that you shouldn’t try to do everything well. Instead, you differentiate a product by doing just one or two things really well. As an employee, it’s likely you have a couple of things you do particularly well or better than most – special talents, natural gifts, a skillset, a job function or a space where you really thrive. Instead of trying to conquer the entire field all at once, consider your unique talents, leverage those opportunities within your role, and choose to simply be an expert in one or two things at work. Like any sports team, you can’t play every position all at once, and the good news is you don’t have to play every position well to be the All-Star – you just have to play one position very well.
